Braving the Elements

There are some trips that test your willingness to endure difficult conditions. That can be humidity and rain in the jungle, snow and ice in the mountains, or even overwhelming crowds. We are in the process of packing for our trip to Ecuador, which isn’t easy because we will be in Quito and climbing up the side of a volcano, which will mean that we will have cold temperatures, and we are also heading into the jungle, which means that we will be dealing with the heat. That means that we need to take cold gear as well as comfortable clothes for the jungle. In order to cut down on the amount of clothes that we need to take, we are counting on layering. During our trip to Iceland, we found some light-weight cold gear that wicks away moisture and definitely keeps you warm without being overly bulky. This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge is about the letter C and we have decided to share a few photos that represent being Cold. Instead of being near the top of the world, we will be at the middle of the world for the next two weeks, so it is a definitely a different experience than our time in Iceland.

The Black Beaches of Iceland

There was so much spectacular scenery as we drove around the southern and western parts of Iceland. As we drove along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we really enjoyed seeing the black beaches, which are basically lava flows that extend into the ocean. The peninsula is often referred to as “Iceland in miniature” because it has everything from beaches, volcanos, glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife. Seeing the beauty of the beaches is a reminder as to the forces of nature and how these forces continuously interact with one another. For this week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge, Colors that Start with the Letter B, we are sharing a few of the photos that we took of those amazing black beaches and lava flows in Iceland.

The Land of Fire and Ice

We have had several friends visit Iceland recently and have enjoyed seeing their images, which are from the spring and summer, although they are completely different than the Iceland that we saw. It is amazing how the time of year that you visit a location can dramatically effect the opinions that you might have of that place. If we could, we would visit places in every season of the year, just to see the differences. What we enjoyed about visiting Iceland in the winter was that it truly illustrated that nickname of the land of fire and ice is truly deserved. This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge is Hot and/or Cold and watching the geysers erupt on the Golden Circle is a wonderful memory that evokes that wonderful contradiction in our minds. Nature provides such magical experiences.
