Walking the Historic Old Town in Lima, Peru

Old town in Lima, also referred to as the Historical Center, is probably most known for its colorful colonial buildings with their fascinating balconies, but there is certainly much more to see than just the architecture. To make the most of your time in the downtown area and we would suggest starting out at the Plaza Mayor or the Main Square and then exploring out from there. There are palaces, the cathedral, official buildings, and other churches in the area, each uniquely beautiful. It is very walkable and you will also find stores carrying tourist items as well as restaurants in the area. We stayed in the Miraflores district, which is by the beach, but it was only a short taxi ride to the Historical Center.

The architecture is certainly the highlight of the Historical Center and the buildings are either colorful or covered with intricate details. There are several palaces including Government Palace, the Archbishop Palace, and the Justice Palace. Obviously there is the Cathedral Basilica of Lima, but there is also the Church and Convent of San Francisco as well as San Pedro Church. There is also the Palacio Municipal or Town Hall located downtown as well. Even with all of these buildings and monuments, your eyes will be naturally drawn to the intricately carved balconies that are on every street in the Historical Center.

Being the heart of Lima, you can certainly expect to find plenty of crowds walking the streets with you. There are vendors selling food and drinks as well as shops to buy items made by the local people of Peru. Occasionally you will see indigenous people dressed in their authentic clothing with items to sell as well. As with many cities, you will also find an abundance of pigeons making the city center their home as well. During our time in Lima, there were guards and police plainly visible, which did provide an extra sense of security as there can be protests on a semi-regular basis. We’d recommend that you register your trip with the local embassy so that you receive notifications of any travel alerts in the region.

Lima is certainly an interesting city and should not just be a landing place on your way to Machu Picchu or other destinations within the country. With wonderful beaches and a vibrant food scene, there is much to do within Lima, but visiting the Historical Center should definitely be at the top of your itinerary. The architecture, culture, and history make it one of the most interesting old town areas in South America.

Making the Most of a Short Stay in Lima, Peru

We didn’t have a lot of time during our visit to Lima, the capital of Peru, but we certainly made the most of the time that we did have. Our hotel was located next to the beaches on the coastline of the city, but we also took time to get into the historic district as well. The two locations couldn’t be more different, but they were definitely equally interesting for their own reasons. It was also our first experience in South America and we really enjoyed seeing some of the indigenous Quechua people in their traditional clothing, something that we would learn even more about during our time in Bolivia. Regardless of how much time you have when visiting Lima, these should certainly be on your itinerary when visiting this wonderful city.

The Upscale Miraflores District – If you visit Lima, Peru, we would suggest staying in the Miraflores district. Miraflores is an upscale district that sits along the Pacific coastline with beautiful beaches, excellent restaurant choices, nice hotels, and it isn’t far from downtown Lima. Obviously, many people visiting Lima come specifically to enjoy the beaches and take advantage of the festive nightlife that is found in the area. Although we weren’t in Lima for a beach vacation, we did enjoy walking down to the beach, soaking up some sun, and grabbing a meal at one of the many outdoor restaurant patios.

Enjoying the Fusion Food and a Traditional Pisco Sour – Lima has become a “foodies” destination because of its reputation for wonderful food and celebrated chefs. One of the reasons that the food has become so popular is because many of the restaurants have taken traditional food of the region and blended it with food from around the world. There are so many options of restaurants to visit that we’d recommend talking to the locals and finding out where they’d recommend you eat. In addition to the food, having a traditional pisco sour is a perfect way to end your day or to start your evening festivities.

Many people fly into Lima as they begin their adventure into Peru and make their way down to visit Machu Picchu. It is definitely worth taking the time to see the capital city of Lima, especially the wonderful architecture of the historical center. Although we didn’t have a lot of time in Lima, we certainly used our opportunity to see as much as we possibly could.

Latin-Style Steak Sandwich

Mention a steak sandwich to someone from the United States and they will most likely envision a Philly steak and cheese. Although we definitely enjoy that style of sandwich, it certainly isn’t the only style out there. In fact, we have had many different versions throughout our travels. The one that stands out the most to us was the one that we ate at the beach in Lima, Peru. It was a steak sandwich with avocado and a creamy sauce that was wonderful. We decided to do a variation on that sandwich with guacamole and Mexican crema. We stayed true to the Latin seasonings and served it on some really fresh rolls that we got from our favorite local sandwich shop. If you wanted to make it a little spicier, you could certainly add some jalapeño peppers to it as well. One of the keys to a good steak sandwich is cutting the meat really thin using a meat slicer if you have one or with a sharp knife. It is also important not to overcook the steak or it will become tough and chewy.

Spices, Onion, and Lettuce

INGREDIENTS

  • 12 oz Ribeye Steak – sliced very thin
  • 1/2 cup Yellow Onion – sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup Black Beans – rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup Guacamole
  • 1 cup Shredded Lettuce
  • 1/4 cup Mexican Crema
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Chipotle Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Granulated Garlic
  • 3 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 4 Fresh Rolls
Starting to Cook the Steak

INSTRUCTIONS

Spread the meat out on a large plate or platter. Combine the cumin, chili powder, garlic, salt and pepper (quantities are approximate and can be adjusted based on your taste) and sprinkle the spice mixture over the meat to be sure to season all of the steak slices. Let sit in the dry marinade for about 20 to 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Put the black beans in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes and then smash them to create a creamy texture. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet. Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the steak to the pan and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the slices have only some pink left to keep them medium-rare. Do not overcook the steak. To prepare the sandwich, spread the black beans on the bottom of the rolls and cover the top bun with mayonnaise. Place the steak and onion mixture on top of the beans, spread guacamole over the steak, spoon some of the Mexican crema over the guacamole, then add shredded lettuce.
