Stepping Back in Time

There is something truly magical about walking through the ruins of an ancient civilization. Perhaps in another life we would have been archeologists, searching for long lost treasures buried by the sands of time. Certainly our trip to Athens was another example of that desire to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. It is hard not to imagine Plato or Socrates walking next to you as you walk along the Parthenon. Examples of the great societies of the past can be found all over the world. Seeing the incredible monuments that have survived for thousands of years can sometimes make us question whether civilizations today are truly as superior as we would like to believe them to be. Whether it is Mesa Verde in Colorado, Tiwanaku and Incallajta in Bolivia, or the Acropolis in Athens, we should embrace our history as much as we marvel at the latest technological advancements. So, for this week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge, Resilient, we thought that we would share a few photos of the ruins that we have seen.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

We have been spending most of our time visiting cities and towns all around Germany and starting to spread out into more areas of Europe in general. We have not lived in a city for a long time, spending most of our time in Colorado Springs which is a city with a small town feel, so this has definitely been a life-changing experience. It doesn’t seem like we are going to have time to go hiking while we are here since there are just too many wonderful places to visit and incredible sights to see. One of the things that we had enjoyed the most about living in Colorado Springs was our close proximity to hiking in the mountains with the incredible beauty of the rugged nature. We have already started to  think about our return to the United States and where we will decide to live when we return, although mostly we wish we could just stay in Europe for at least a few months more. On the one hand, we have options which is nice, but Colorado Springs has been home for more than twenty years, so it is hard not to consider going back there upon our return. Before we cross that bridge, though, we have plenty of travel ahead of us while we are here in Germany. When we saw this week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge – Rocks, Paper, Scissors, our immediate thoughts returned to hiking in the mountains of Colorado. Obviously these are more boulders than rocks, but these surroundings are very dear to our hearts and we will carry them with us no matter where our travels take us.

Time Lapse

We don’t often take photos as a series, we tend to just point and shoot towards the objects that draw our attention. The one exception to this is with sunsets, which by now you know we truly love seeing. We will often take a series of pictures as the sun slowly descends from the sky until it finally leaves only the glow against the clouds to remind you that it was once above the horizon. For this week’s Daily Post Discover Challenge – One, Two, Three, we decided to show not just our favorite shot of a sunset, but instead show the sequence of shots that we captured.  We aren’t putting every photo here, but the photos are in the order in which they were taken. This was a sunset as seen from our house, or what used to be our house, in Colorado Springs earlier this year in April.
