Nature’s Little Surprises

Whenever we get out into nature, we are often surprised by something unexpected. Sometimes it can be as simple as sighting an unexpected animal, but other times it is something more dramatic. This week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge is Surprise, so we chose a few photos that remind us of how fascinating nature can be.

We were touring an old church fortress in Romania on an extremely cold day and took several photos of the hallways as we walked through the labyrinth of corridors. After we returned home and went through our pictures, we had several photos with ghostly images. We did not see any of the fog-like images while we were actually touring the church, but obviously our camera captured the frozen air even though it wasn’t visible to the naked eye. If you use your imagination, you can potentially even imagine it to be a ghost instead of a natural phenomena.

Frozen Air or a Ghost?

One of the things that we visited when we were in Chennai, India, was a location called Tiger Cave. It was unearthed after the horrible tsunami of 2004. To think that something so amazing can be uncovered from a violent act of nature is truly an interesting contradiction.

When we were in Iceland last February, we drove out along the coast, which was frozen and beautiful. Then, suddenly, the ground thawed and we were surrounded by lava rocks and there was not a flake of snow to be found.

Summer in the Rockies

Springtime in the Rockies is definitely a time of extremes and this year has been no different. In the front range of Colorado, March and April are actually the snowiest months, not the typical winter months. In the past thirty days, we have had three significant snow storms and we are a little tired of the snow and would prefer rain over snow at this point. On the bright side, these spring storms are extremely necessary and make for beautiful conditions in the summer. This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge is Summer – Fire, two words that people in Colorado never want to hear in the same sentence. For this photo challenge we chose a few photos from previous summers that represent various images indicative of summertime in the Rocky Mountains. It is mostly beautiful, but sometimes volatile. We chose a couple of picture-perfect summer days in the mountains, a typical summertime sunset, angry storm clouds that we don’t want to see, and finally a picture from the Waldo Canyon Fire, something we would prefer to forget.

In the Thick of It

We have started to contemplate our first adventure since arriving back in the States from Europe. One thing that we agreed upon when we were abroad was that we would focus on Central and South America after we returned home. With that in mind, the one place that keeps coming up in our conversations is Ecuador. We haven’t completely decided if that is where we will go next, but if it isn’t Ecuador, it will likely be someplace similar. It is hard to believe that is has almost been a year since our trip to Bolivia last May. This week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge is Dense, so we thought that we would share a few photos of the dense rainforest where we went hiking.
