Unusual Focus

As we’ve been going through our photographs from Budapest and Bratislava (over 1,700), we have found a few unusual photographs. Regardless of where you travel, you will often find statues that focus on the hands of the subject as the can be very expressive. Whether it is welcoming, comforting, an offering of peace, or fists of aggression, the hands can be as emotional as the eyes. One of the photographs that we’ve included here was taken at the hotel bar where we were staying in Budapest. After a long day of walking around the city, we stopped for a glass of wine and there was a weird green light that glowed underneath the bar top. It actually made for a strange effect and we couldn’t help but take a photograph of our hands. Do you ever find yourself taking photographs of odd subjects during your travels?

Emotion Captured in Stone Statues Around the World

You don’t have to be an art critic to appreciate how lifelike statues that are carved in stone and marble can be. Not only do they somehow seem to capture the actual movement of their subjects, but often their eyes express an intense emotion. It is hard to imagine that these incredible works of art were once just blocks of stone with no semblance of the shapes that they would eventually become. Some of the facial expressions are truly amazing, whether showing fear, pain, or even passion. Here are some of our favorite statues that we have seen during our travels.

Help to Jog the Memory

Traveling to places can be overwhelming at times as there is so much to see and learn about a location. Like most people, we will read information about a destination and will get pamphlets, maps, and other materials as we visit specific sites. That doesn’t mean that when we get back, we will remember everything we read or learned about a place, especially for some of the lesser known buildings or even specific pieces of art. Therefore, we will often take a photo of a sign or plaque to help remind us about a place or item after we get home. We often find these photos to be very helpful as we look back at pictures of our trip and need a little help in remembering some of the specifics. Do you take photographs of signs and plaques during your trips?
