Church Towers and Skyscrapers Rising towards the Sky

We really enjoy seeing historic churches throughout the world and most of them can be found in the old town areas of the cities. There are times, though, when modern cities with skyscrapers surround the old churches and the images can be just as striking. Seeing the bell towers reaching towards the sky in parallel with the glass towers is quite a juxtaposition of images. Obviously it goes in direct opposition to the desire to have the churches and cathedrals be the tallest buildings in a city where people could see them from all of the surrounding areas as they ventured towards the city. Here are some of our favorite examples of churches and skyscrapers.

Walking Our Neighborhood in Frankfurt, Germany

One of the things that we did just before moving back to Colorado from Frankfurt was to take our normal walk through the neighborhood and take photographs. For the most part, we took them so that we would have them to remember our time there and the places that we visited frequently. They obviously aren’t the typical tourist type of pictures, but it might give you a sense of what it is like there. Our apartment was located between the university and the old opera house and we walked these streets every day as we didn’t have a car and used public transportation to get around. We got used to going to different stores with apartments above them for dry goods, meat, produce, bread, and of course the pharmacy. So, join us as we walk from our apartment building towards Altstadt in Frankfurt.

Skyscrapers and City Skylines

Traveling provides such a wonderful opportunity to see historic locations as well as the ingenuity of the human race. Cities have evolved over time and each generation has added to their splendor in a variety of different ways. We certainly enjoy seeing the historic old town areas, the beautiful cathedrals, and the grand architecture of castles and manors. With that said, we also love views of modern skyscrapers with their glistening windows. In many cities, the local citizens work in the modern section of the city that is filled with tall buildings that are away from the historic, old town sections that have kept their original charm. Sometimes the two exist right next to each other with historic buildings sitting next to modern structures.
